Guardiola: Carabao Cup performance won't suffice in UCL

The Citizens clinched a 3-2 victory at Ashton Gate on Tuesday to secure a 5-3 aggregate win over their Championship opposition and book a place in the Carabao Cup final.

However, in the second-leg clash, City were leading 2-0 only to be pegged back to 2-2 before a stoppage-time winner from Kevin de Bruyne secured the win. Guardiola believes a similar performance against Champions League opposition would have seen the Sky Blues bundled out of the competition.

“Every game they play, they play with a desire, a hunger to win,” the Spaniard said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“So for our players it was a good lesson to learn for the Champions League. At 0-2 it was perfect, and then afterwards it was 2-2.

“Maybe at that level, in the Champions League, you are out of the competition.”

City will travel to Switzerland next month to face FC Basel in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
