Match summary
Newcastle started well as Joselu converted from close range from Dwight Gayle's cross. Riyad Mahrez levels matters and Demarai Gray makes it 2-1.
Gayle found the target to make it 2-2 before Ayoze Perez was unfortunate as his attempted clearance flew into the goal in the 86th minute.
Match report
It was Newcastle United who hit the front inside the first five minutes as Gayle latched on to Mikel Merino's clever pass into the box on the left, and he pulled it back for Joselu to tap home from close range.
Moments later Gayle nearly made it 2-0 as Wilfred Ndidi lost possession and the ball broke to the striker in a dangerous area. However, his low strike went narrowly wide of the far post. City hit back in the 10th minute as Mahrez showed good skill to turn quickly on the edge of the area, before seeing his strike tipped around the post by Karl Darlow.
In the 20th minute the Foxes drew level as Ndidi found Mahrez and the Morocco international burst forward on a diagonal trademark run from right to left, and powered home a left-footed shot from 25-yards out. City dominated possession in the first half although United were able to keep the score as it was until the break.
After the interval, Joselu had a great chance in the 50th minute to make it 2-1 to the home team. From Matt Ritchie's corner, he sent a bullet of a header just wide of the post.
The miss would prove costly as in the 60th minute Gray grabbed Leicester's second. From Marc Albrighton's knockdown off Mahrez's initial pass, the forward hammered home into the top left-hand corner of the net.
The lively Mahrez then went close in the 66th minute but Darlow denied the winger with a sharp one-handed stop. Incredibly, United equalised in the 73rd minute as the impressive Gayle saw his strike deflected into the back of the net off a deflection from Harry Maguire which left Kasper Schmeichel with little chance.
The same player then was inches wide from adding a third in the 79th minute when his strike from inside the area on the left had Schmeichel beaten, but whistled past the post.
Nonetheless, Newcastle's hearts were broken as on the break when Perez netted an own goal in the 86th minute. On a counter Jamie Vardy picked out Shinji Okazaki who, while in the act of shooting, saw the ball toe-poked off his foot by a desperate Perez and into the goal.
